FARM AND RANCH WELLNESS: THE NEXT STEPS

NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY: The overarching goals of the project titled, Farm and Ranch Wellness: The Next Steps, are to (1) develop a catalog of resources, trainings and connections to help farmers and ranchers know where to turn and, (2) to provide a fuller and more robust network of stress assistance programs, including a stress hotline and prescription drug abuse education, in the North Central Region.Individuals who are directly engaged in farming and ranching can lower their stress by attending programs such as "Stress on the Farm: Strategies that Help" or financial management programs for farm and ranch women. Advocates would be better able to assist farmers and ranchers after attending Question. Persuade. Refer. (QPR) or Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). All audiences can benefit from GenerationRx. It offers a comprehensive set of materials on the dangers of misusing prescription medications, including opioids. The Iowa Concern Hotline, that offers confidential stress counseling, will also be supported and is available to states in the North Central Region. Each participating university will have an on-line site designated to Farm and Ranch Wellness that lists available resources and publications. These sites will also link to other participating university sites. With permission, links to all universities sites in the North Central Region that target farm stress will also be included. An on-line program catalog of stress assistance programs will then be completed and made available region wide.

OBJECTIVES: The overarching goals of this project are to (1) develop an on-line catalog of resources and connections to help farmers and ranchers know where to turn and (2) provide a fuller and more robust network of stress assistance programs, including a stress hotline and prescription drug abuse educationto farmers, ranchers and their advocates in the North Central Region. Goal 1. Develop an on-line catalog of resources and connections to help farmers and ranchers know where to turn.Clearinghouse. Eight state cooperative Extension Services representing Iowa, Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri, North Dakota and Ohio will partner to develop an on-line program catalog of stress assistance programs, curricula, resources and trainings in the North Central Region to help farmers and ranchers know where to turn. Principal investigators from each participating organization will complete catalogs from their state organizations. The project director will interface with other states in the North Central Region to obtain those state resources. Each state in the Region will have access to the on-line program catalog of regional stress assistance programs and be able to link to all other states to access websites, podcasts, webcasts and publications related to stress assistance.Team Education. To assist with this goal, each state PI or Co-PI will require designated time to develop this catalog. It will be the responsibility of the state PI or Co-PI to share this on-line program catalog, plus the on-line links to the catalog to other regional states and to the Project Director. This catalog will also be shared throughout each state's Extension system and to key contacts and entities in the state, including commodity groups, legislators, agribusiness groups, bankers associations, NIOSH centers for agricultural safety and health, veterinarians, etc. Links to this program catalog of FRSAN activities and programs can be provided at any agriculture related training or other extension related trainings being offered in communities under stress. News releases and social media announcements related to the posting of this catalog can also be provided.Goal 2. Provide a fuller and more robust network of stress assistance programs, including a stress hotline and prescription drug abuse educationto farmers, ranchers and their advocates in the North Central Region.Robust Network. The state PI's or Co-PI's are charged with supervising the continuation of existing stress assistance programs and the addition of new programs to fill state programming gaps. Therefore, each state will have unique and specific objectives for completing these overarching goals. Each state plan will be completed within the project year.
